Make sure your boat is in a good state by performing a safety check every 30 days:
- Pay special attention to your ventilation, navigation lights, and fuel tanks.
- Ensure that you have all the necessary safety equipment on board (such as life jackets, navigation charts, and a pre-departure checklist).
- You should have sound-producing devices for the boat, such as an air horn, flares, similar distress signalers, and at least one fire extinguisher. Prepare a few extra dock lines for unusual situations and carry at least two fenders for docking or in case of towing.
While you’re boating, make sure you have at least one anchor set up and bent onto your anchor line. Before setting out, but after you make sure you have all of the physical items in place, be sure to check the weather forecast.
