Setting a cancellation policy

If a trip is canceled by the renter, the cancellation is effective immediately. Cancellations made by owners are 100% refundable to the renter.

For commercial operators with their own captain list, refund payouts do not include the captain price if payment was to be collected at dock.

The total refund depends on which of the three cancellation policies you set (flexible, moderate, or strict).

Flexible

  • 100% payout for cancellations made within 24 hours of the booking start time.

Moderate

  • 100% payout for cancellations made within 2 days of the booking start time.
  • 50% payout for cancellations made between 2-5 days of the booking start time.

Strict

  • 100% payout for cancellations made within 14 days of the booking start time.
  • 50% payout for cancellations made between 14-30 days of the booking start time.

In the event of extenuating circumstances, renters may be entitled to a 100% refund.

You can edit your cancellation policy by navigating to your Owner Dashboard > My boats > Edit Listing > Boat details > Scroll down to Cancellation policy > Edit. Changes made to the cancellation policy will not apply to your Approved bookings.

Trip modifications

If the date of the booking is edited, the cancellation policy carries over to the new start date. However, if the edit took place during a cancellation fee period, the original policy will apply to the rescheduled date in event of a canceled booking.

This can be confusing, so we’ve put together a few scenarios below using our moderate cancellation policy as an example! If you’ve ever in doubt, please reach out to Boatsetter Support at contact@boatsetter.com and we’ll walk you through everything.

  1. On September 4, a renter reschedules a booking for September 10 (moderate cancellation policy) for October 10. Because this is more than five days in advance, they are still able to cancel the rescheduled booking before the five-day moderate cancellation window kicks in again.
  2. On September 7, a renter reschedules a booking for September 10 (moderate cancellation policy) for October 10. Because this is within 2-5 days of the booking start time, the renter will only be eligible for a maximum 50% refund should they cancel the rescheduled booking before the new booking date.
  3. The morning of September 10, a renter reschedules an afternoon booking on September 10 (moderate cancellation policy) for October 10. Because this is within 24 hours of the booking start time, the renter will not be eligible for refund should they cancel the rescheduled booking before the new booking date.
