With Buoy, both renters and owners can enjoy a safer and more secure boating experience, ensuring protection in the case of accidents or damage.

Buoy is a reliable trip-based vessel rental insurance compliant with [SB 606 criteria](https://www.boatsetter.com/sb-606-florida-boating-rental-license) that offers protection for both renters and owners during the rental period. Unlike many traditional insurance policies, Buoy coverage suits the needs of renters, providing an added layer of security and peace of mind.

## How does SB 606 relate to Buoy?

SB606 is a Florida boating law aiming to increase vessel safety via new requirements. The ultimate goal of this law is to improve boating safety and prevent accidents on the water as participation in recreational boating continues to grow.

SB 606 requires boat rental operators to:

* Secure a no-cost livery permit from the FWC prior to offering a vessel for lease or rent
* Carry a renters insurance policy that meets the specifications set under SB 606\*
* Deliver pre-rental safety and operational instructions to renters
* Report any accidents or unnecessarily overdue rentals to the FWC
* Display boating safety information in a place visible to the renting public

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Will this cost me more money or cut into my earnings?** No, this will not change how much you earn.

**What if renters don’t purchase, am I at all liable?** Please refer to the [Buoy policy](https://www.buoy.rent/us-coverage) or consult with your insurance broker for coverage-specific details.

**Do I get a commission for selling this insurance to renters?** No. There is no commission to owners for the sale of any Buoy insurance policies.

**Does Buoy help me comply with the law?** Yes, the policy meets all requirements of the Florida Safe Boating Act of 2022.

**How much does the renter pay?** The insurance price per trip will differ based on factors such as the duration of the charter, season of the year, boat type, and the age of the renter. On average, Buoy insurance is less per rental period than rental car insurance, U-Haul insurance, or RV insurance.

**How is Boatsetter supporting this?** In order to remain compliant with SB 606, we have partnered with Buoy to underwrite our existing owners and their boats for a renter’s insurance policy that fulfills regulation requirements. Affected Florida listings need to offer this policy to remain active on Boatsetter. This policy is free for owners and will not cut into your earnings. Once underwritten, renters can purchase or decline trip-based coverage when booking your vessel on Boatsetter.

**What information do I need to have ready?**

* Boat Registration Number (BRN): The BRN can be found on your boat’s registration document and will be in one of the following three formats:
    *   State registration level: Typically 2 letters + 4 numbers + 2 letters. (i.e. FL1234YY)
    * USCG level: Comprising 6 to 8 characters, which may be all digits or start with 1 or 2 letters (A-Z) followed by 6 or 7 digits. (i.e. DO123456)
    *   International Maritime Organization: A unique, seven-digit number. (i.e. 1234567)
*   Boat Value
*   Engine quantity
*   Total horsepower

**How do I meet the requirement / how do I get underwritten for Buoy coverage if I have an existing boat on the platform?** Login to your Boatsetter account and navigate to your Owner Dashboard > My boats. This warning icon will appear if your boat requires an update.
